Introduction

I joined the IU Indianapolis Honors College in my first semester of college and was eager to see what was to come and how I would grow as a person. As a first-year student, I was juggling my coursework along with joining The Moving Company, a dance company on campus. Among other things, in the second semester of freshman year, I took the Honors First-Year Experience class. This class helped develop my understanding of myself and of how I wanted to grow academically and professionally.

01

I am statement (H200)

I am an outgoing person who is curious about stem and strives to be as empathetic as possible. Things like my cat, nature and family bring me a lot of joy. My need to positively impact peoples lives is what motivates me along with support from my mentor and my best friend.

02

I Want to become Statement (H200)

I want to become the person I would look up to as a child. I want to become as bright as the sky on a sunny day. I will reflect the same light I am shining now. I am the vision of power and strength. I will keep my integrity and have grit. My goal is to become a caring and empathetic person. One who cares about others, especially those I am caring for in the workplace but, also in everyday life. I am the person I will always be and I will strive to keep doing so. I am one to keep those close to me close; friends are to be cherished and loved. My need to have such a positive impact on people is important to me but, I also need to realize my self is just as, if more important. I will become everything I am right now and everything I want to be in the future. My mental health has always been important to me but, I need to focus on that more. I want to grow my thoughts and expectations of myself and who I am as a person. Not necessarily making myself have bigger expectations but, making ones that are reasonable, important, and goal driven. I will strive to keep up with a growth mindset as my mind is one of the most powerful things I have control of. I will become the role model I will always look up to because no one will ever be perfect.

03

 New I Am Statement

I am a neuroscience student minoring in dance and psychology. My cat and my family still bring me a lot of joy, and I now care for chickens too! I still heavily believe in positively impacting people's lives, as I have worked as a medical assistant in a jail, and I am currently working in an Alcohol research lab studying the neurobiological and behavioral mechanisms in rats.

04

New I Want to Become Statement

I want to become a clinical psychologist who is passionate about caring for people in underserved communities. I want to specifically work in a clinical setting like a hospital or a jail.

Reflection

After reviewing my original H200 statements, I realized just how much I have improved and changed. But, at the same time, I am still the same person I was freshman year of college. My I am statement still clearly represents me as a person, but this time I wanted to redirect it to being more academically driven. As a soon-to-be-grad, I can say that I have become the person I wanted to be and so much more. I have both improved mentally and academically, and my younger self would definitely be in disbelief if I told her the research I have done and that college life does get better.
